Nanjing is situated in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River and is surrounded by the Ningzhen mountain range to the south-east. Since ancient times it has been an important city, twice being adopted as the capital.
Nanjing’s history stretches back 5000 years, but recorded history begins in the Warring States period. Records indicating it’s history from this point to present show that Nanjing did not get an easy ride by any means. Fires, peasant uprisings, revolutions, floods, rebellions and invasions both foreign and at home have long been apart of the cities backdrop.
In the 19th century Nanjing entered into it’s most troubled times. The Taiping rebellion of 1851-64 saw Nanjing separate from the Qing Dynasty and subsequently was the first of the areas ceded to the British. British, Qing, US mercenaries and a combination of other European nations were needed to oust the reluctant Taiping.
Taiping leader, Hong Xiuquan, actually claimed to be the brother of Jesus Christ and therefore the son of god. He also claimed to have been sent to Earth in order to Rid the world of demons, demons aka Qing officials. He traveled the countryside preaching about creating something he called the Heavenly Kingdom, until he attracted a zealot force numbering upward of 20,000. This army eventually took Hunan, Hubei Anhui and in March 1853 took Nanjing. Unfortunately, for the Taiping, likely due to foreign occupation, Xiuquan was not able conquer Beijing and Shanghai. In the end his reign lasted just 11 years.
There were yet further problems for Nanjing during the Second World War but if you travel to Nanjing you will hear all about it. Check out GoNanjing.com and we'll show you where to find out all that and more...
